Sunderland face a pivotal summer, with uncertainty around Lutsharel Geertruida and eight players approaching the end of their deals.
Sky Sports Germany reports that Geertruida will not remain at Sunderland beyond the summer and that the €23m buy option will not be triggered, with the defender to return to RB Leipzig initially as a permanent move elsewhere is explored after initial enquiries.
The defender is not the only potential departure, with several Black Cats players entering the final weeks of their current deals.
As things stand, eight deals are due to expire in summer 2026, covering Simon Moore, Bertrand Traore, Lutsharel Geertruida on loan, Dennis Cirkin and Harrison Jones. Niall Huggins, Zak Johnson and Dan Neil are listed as currently out on loan.
Further expiries are scheduled across 2027, 2028, 2029 and 2030, with additional players also currently out on loan.
