Liverpool suffered a 4-2 loss at Aston Villa in the Premier League on Friday.
Despite Virgil Van Dijk responding to Morgan Rogers’ opener, they could not find any inspiration and crumbled under pressure.
Several players can be singled out for their poor performances, including goalkeeper Giorgio Mamardashvili.
The summer signing was underwhelming once again, and fans will be particularly concerned with Alisson Becker likely leaving Anfield this summer.
He has not done much to prove that he can be a reliable successor to the long-serving Liverpool goalie.
His positioning throughout was suspect, and his kicking was even worse. He did play some good long balls, but the fans were on him, and it affected his game.
Although Liverpool have more pressing needs elsewhere in the squad, they cannot head into next season without signing serious competition for Mamardashvili.
The 25-year-old has looked short of confidence and overwhelmed by the spotlight during his first year in England.
Liverpool need another experienced stopper capable of genuinely pushing for the number one shirt rather than simply acting as back-up.
Competition could sharpen Mamardashvili’s focus while also giving Arne Slot a dependable alternative if performances continue to fluctuate.
Despite his struggles, it would be premature to write him off after one difficult campaign. The pace, intensity and scrutiny at a club like Liverpool can consume even elite talents.
A summer reset could ultimately prove vital for both Mamardashvili and Liverpool as they look to move forward from a chaotic season.
