Man City Held by Nottingham Forest as Title Race Pressure Grows

Manchester City’s pursuit of the Premier League summit suffered another frustrating twist as Nottingham Forest fought back to secure a 2-2 draw at the Etihad Stadium. While City twice moved ahead, Forest’s persistence ensured the champions dropped valuable points, leaving them seven behind leaders Arsenal.

With both title contenders playing simultaneously, Arsenal edged past Brighton, increasing the significance of this result for Man City. Pep Guardiola’s side extended their unbeaten run to ten matches across all competitions, yet the sense of opportunity lost was difficult to ignore.

Semenyo Strike Rewards Early Man City Pressure

Man City controlled possession from the outset, circulating the ball with patience and probing for weaknesses in Nottingham Forest’s defensive structure. The visitors were content to retreat into their shape and wait for moments to counter, though Antoine Semenyo hinted at danger early when he fired an effort into the side netting.

City’s dominance eventually brought reward after half an hour. Rayan Cherki delivered a delicate cross into the penalty area and Semenyo responded with an exquisite volley, guiding the ball beyond Matz Sels. It marked his seventh goal since arriving in January and offered a glimpse of the attacking edge Guardiola’s side have sought in recent weeks.

Forest had their moments before the break. Morgan Gibbs-White tested Gianluigi Donnarumma with a low strike and Igor Jesus also forced the Italian goalkeeper into action with a skidding drive.

Nottingham Forest Fight Back Through Gibbs-White and Anderson

The second half carried a different rhythm. Nottingham Forest began to show greater ambition and their equaliser arrived in remarkable fashion on 56 minutes. After Igor Jesus nodded the ball into the area, Gibbs-White reacted instinctively, flicking a backheel beyond Donnarumma to level the score.

City responded with urgency. Erling Haaland saw an effort deflect onto the roof of the net and the resulting corner provided the breakthrough. Rodri rose highest to head home, restoring Man City’s advantage and seemingly placing the game back in familiar territory.

Forest, however, were not finished. With thirteen minutes remaining, Elliot Anderson produced a moment of clarity. Receiving the ball twenty five yards from goal, he curled a superb effort beyond Donnarumma to earn Nottingham Forest a point that could prove vital in their battle against relegation.

Title Race Implications for Man City

From City’s perspective, the evening will feel like a missed opportunity. Haaland came close after rounding Sels in the first half, steering wide, while a second half appeal for a penalty was waved away by referee Darren England and VAR Tony Harrington.

Phil Foden also returned to the starting line up but struggled to influence proceedings, extending a run of seventeen matches without scoring.

City pushed forward in stoppage time, Semenyo curling a free kick narrowly over and Savinho seeing a shot cleared off the line by Murillo. Yet the decisive moment belonged to Forest, whose resilience ensured a point that keeps them outside the relegation zone on goal difference.

For Man City, the title race has tightened. Arsenal hold the advantage and Guardiola’s team now face the challenge of responding quickly if they are to keep their hopes alive.
