Manchester United are now mulling over a cut-price move for Bayern Munich’s Dayot Upamecano, who has just one year remaining on his deal at the Allianz Arena.

Indeed, the French centre-half has kept tight-lipped on his Bayern future amid concerns from the hierarchy that he is leaning towards a move elsewhere. From their point of view, losing him for nothing next June is an unthinkable prospect.

Back in July 2021, the Bundesliga giants shelled out £36.6 million to activate Upamecano’s release clause with RB Leipzig, beating a host of Premier League sides to his signature before tying him down to a five-year deal.

Now, it seems as though the 26-year-old is finally ready to ply his trade in the English top flight, as Christian Falk has revealed (via the CF Bayern Insider) that Upamecano’s agent has offered him out to a handful of EPL teams – including United.

The Reds have established their interest in taking the player on board, which is now said to be ‘making life difficult’ for Bayern as they do their utmost to negotiate a new and extended deal.

At United this summer, a defender has not been high on the list of priorities for the key decision-makers in the same way a new striker has, but that’s not to say they’d turn their noses up at reinforcements in the backline.

They sanctioned the departures of both Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans when their contracts expired at the end of the season and are still waiting on Lisandro Martinez to return to full fitness, after which there will be concerns over whether he can stay injury-free for an entire campaign – something he’s yet to do since he made the move in 2022.
