Ratings

Will Murdock – 8.5 – Unbeatable in goal on the night, he made three incredible saves that were worth as much as a goal. His proactiveness in coming off his line was important for cutting off angles and thwarting balls played over the top by Dortmund.

Jacob Devaney – N/A – An unfortunate injury just three minutes into the match saw him come off. United will hope it is not serious, as he has been a frontrunner for the Under-21 Player of the Season award so far.

Louis Jackson – 7.5 – Saw playing time despite being on loan at Solihull Moors, he defended the box well and let little through on his side.

Dan Armer – 7 – Made some good passes and showed his range with passes into the left channel. He defended well for the most part but lacked a bit of pace to help Leon out as the Paraguayan struggled in the second half.

Diego Leon – 6.5 – After a decent first half, he was a bit sloppy on the ball but his tenacity and relentlessness saw him regain possession almost every time he lost it. He put in some strong tackles and did well getting forward. In the second half, he struggled a bit with the speed of Babis Drakas, who got the better of him.

Sekou Kone – 8 – He started the match with a few wayward passes but found his feet, including an excellent through ball to Fletcher. Most impressive was his off-the-ball work in midfield, as he seemed to sweep up every loose ball. His crucial interceptions meant Dortmund were not able to play through the middle.

Tyler Fletcher – 8 – An all-around performance, he was key to United controlling the midfield, chipping in defensively as well as getting involved in attack.

Gabriele Biancheri – 9 – Scored twice thanks to some clinical finishing — one with his right and one with his left. Despite playing out of position on the right, he did well throughout to get involved in the play. His body positioning allowed him to hold up the ball superbly, rarely losing possession. He also displayed a good range of passing with some nice switches to Scanlon on the opposite flank.

Jayce Fitzgerald – 7 – An industrious performance, he covered ground well and was in the thick of the action but lacked a bit of the guile you want in a number ten.

James Scanlon – 7.5 – A decent first half, but he really came alive in the second when United started hitting on the counter. His movement off the shoulder and driving runs inside were a constant source of danger for Dortmund.

Chido Obi – 6.5 – Came away with an assist for Biancheri’s first goal, playing a nice pass to spread the play to the right. He did a lot of the small things well and worked hard to press but had an off day around the box when it came to his shooting.

Substitutes

James Overy – 7.5 – A good performance going both ways, he got forward and combined well with the midfield and was also strong 1v1 defensively.

Sam Mather – 6.5 – Had a couple of good moves, including a pass to set up Leon, and joined in United’s counter-attacks well.
