Fabrizio Romano reports Manchester City made their first official offer today, Tuesday 4 August, for Marseille goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli, as Leeds United near a £40m agreement for James Trafford.
Trafford, 23, is on a FIFA-mandated three-week post-World Cup break after England’s campaign ended on 18 July.
City have been linked with Rulli, who is also taking three weeks off after featuring in Argentina’s run to the World Cup final.
Barring an unexpected turn, Rulli will be City’s second-choice and Trafford will complete his move to Leeds, overtaking Georginio Rutter as the club’s record signing. He will arrive as the undisputed No 1.
Leeds currently have two senior goalkeepers. Lucas Perri is believed to be close to joining Torino on loan with an option to buy.
Perri missed the last two US friendlies after a training knock, with Alex Cairns starting wins against Sunderland and Liverpool. If Trafford finalises his switch, he will be Leeds’ third signing after free agent Harry Wilson and £34m centre-back Tarik Muharemovic.
Leeds host RB Leipzig on Saturday, then play Manchester United in Dublin next Wednesday, before finishing pre-season against FC Augsburg at Elland Road on Saturday 15 August.
