Although Harry Amass has yet to feature for the senior team this season, Manchester United are planning to activate their option to extend his contract.

The left-back made his senior debut during the 2024/25 campaign under Ruben Amorim, and he was hailed for his ‘aggressive and fearless’ attitude.

Last season, Amass spent the first half of the campaign with the free-falling Sheffield Wednesday, finding success on an individual level. In January, he moved to fellow Championship club Norwich City, but an early injury wrecked his experience at Carrow Road.

After returning to Carrington in the summer, the 19-year-old was involved in some of Man Utd’s pre-season friendlies.

While the Reds were expected to buy a new left-back, Amass was placed on the transfer list. But when the club failed to bring in Lewis Hall (or an alternative), they decided to keep the teenager at Michael Carrick’s disposal.

However, the manager hasn’t used Amass even when Luke Shaw was out with an injury, instead resorting to Noussair Mazraoui and Patrick Dorgu.

But while a January departure could be on the cards for the underused youngster, United still intend to extend his contract.

According to Manchester Evening News journalist Steven Railstone, the Red Devils will trigger their option to extend the player’s contract, which will expire at the end of the season.

Therefore, the deadline will be pushed back from June 2027 to 2028. The move should be made official before January.

Why Man Utd will extend Amass contract

As the source explains, Amass’ imminent contract extension won’t necessarily mean a future at Old Trafford, but it is merely aimed at protecting the club’s best interests by preserving an asset.

After all, if United plan to sell the left-back in January with only six months left on his contract, his market value will be significantly lower.

Unless the youngster can make a real breakthrough between now and the end of the year, leaving Carrington would be the wisest choice, as playing for the club’s second team has been a major step back in a promising career, especially following his exploits at Wednesday last season.
