According to Globo.com, the Maracanã used protective netting in the away section for the first time on Sunday during Flamengo v Santos. The mesh had been installed previously but had not been deployed.
The stadium consortium introduced the measure on the principle of reciprocity with clubs whose grounds already use nets, including Allianz Parque, home of Palmeiras, and Arena MRV, home of Atlético-MG.
The move also relates to safety and increasing capacity at the venue.
Under a Military Police directive, using the net allows Flamengo to open an extra 2,000 seats in the South Lower sector. The visiting allocation is in the South Upper.
The North Upper, used for visiting fans at Fluminense matches, is likewise equipped but has not yet been used.
