Manchester United could do with defensive reinforcements moving forward, given the current options at Ruben Amorim’s disposal.

Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans left in the summer, while Harry Maguire has also been linked with an exit. Add to this Lisandro Martinez’s injury woes, and it is clear that a new centre-back is needed.

INEOS’ plans of recruiting one had to be shelved as improving the attack took precedence based on what had transpired last season.

Next summer, expect the co-owners to be active in trying to find a centre-half who fits the head coach’s style, and as per TBR Football, a surprise name could be headed to Old Trafford.

New CB hunt

Marc Guehi was agonisingly close to a switch to Liverpool this summer, only for the deal to fall through at the last minute.

The England international is reportedly happy to continue at Crystal Palace but his current deal expires next summer, and the 25-year-old has no plans of extending his stay.

Being a free agent, naturally a lot of clubs are expected to vie for his signature, and the list includes United. Tottenham Hotspur, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Real Madrid.

“Liverpool will be back for him, of course. But they know they’ll be one of many clubs making an offer. Now, with Guehi, it resets everything. Everyone starts at a blank slate.

Guehi the chosen option

“Guehi’s people are aware of the clubs who have already told them they’ll be making an offer next summer – clubs like Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid.

“In England, let’s see where Tottenham finish – they love him as a player. Would Chelsea come into the equation on a free transfer? Of course, they would. Man United? If they finish in the top four, of course they do.”

Guehi proved to be a catalyst for Oliver Glasner last term, as the Eagles clinched the FA Cup crown. The “exceptional” star scored three times while also registering two assists. Most importantly, he helped keep 17 clean sheets.

Liverpool will not have it as easy next time, and they could very much miss out on the Palace star, which would be a huge blow for Arne Slot. The pain would be double if the Red Devils won the race in the end.
