Marco Silva’s new Benfica contract carries an automatic one-year extension if he wins the national title. According to Glorioso 1904, Rui Costa set out the key terms while addressing Mourinho’s exit and Silva’s hiring.

Silva will be presented at 17:00 on Friday at the Benfica Museum. The release clause has been set at €15 million.

Rui Costa said Benfica face three qualifying rounds to reach the Europa League, and that the club must regard themselves as one of the candidates.

He stressed he was not saying Benfica will win, but they must be contenders. He added the finances allow a season without the Champions League, though it has an impact, and they still intend to strengthen and fight in all competitions.

He added that this mechanism could take the agreement through 2028/29.

Marco Silva returns to Portugal’s top flight after 11 years away. His last job in the country was with Sporting in 2014/15, when he won the Taça de Portugal and finished third in the Primeira Liga.
