Over the past year, Manchester United tried to recruit players tailored to Ruben Amorim’s system.
However, despite the high hopes surrounding his project, Amorim was dismissed before it truly took off, with the Portuguese coach departing Old Trafford at the start of the year.
In the aftermath, while many of Amorim’s mistakes are now being corrected by caretaker head coach Michael Carrick, it was not solely the coach at fault; INEOS also made costly blunders.
To begin with, one glaring mistake came in recruitment. In their pursuit of creative No.10s, United ended up allowing all their natural left‑wingers to leave.
Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho were all moved on, and unfortunately, a replacement of their profile was not secured. As a result, alongside the search for top midfield talent, signing a left winger has become a top priority for the 20‑time English champions.
Already, several names have been linked, with RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande among those touted.
Nevertheless, United may not even need to spend to solve the issue. There are alternatives available that could save them millions in transfer funds.
Patrick Dorgu, before his injury, impressed when filling in on the left flank, and there is growing talk of converting him into a permanent winger.
At the same time, speculation continues over a possible recall for Marcus Rashford. Reports suggest the caretaker head coach, if handed the job permanently, would welcome Rashford back into his squad.
Carrick is willing to offer the forward, who has been thriving at Camp Nou with 12 goals and 10 assists in 32 games, a second chance. Yet, according to Marca, the 28‑year‑old is not enthusiastic about returning to Old Trafford.
Barcelona hold a purchase option in their deal for Rashford, and if United wish to block it, the Spanish outlet explains:
“The only option they would have would be to resort to diplomacy. That is, to convince the player to reject Barcelona and thus return to Old Trafford.
“However, that’s not going to happen. Rashford wants to continue playing for the Catalan club. This is his current stance, and a few days ago, he made statements to this effect, emphasising his intention to remain at the Camp Nou.”
Consequently, if those claims are accurate, it is clear Rashford has moved on. He cannot realistically be considered an option for United’s left wing next season.
Therefore, even if Dorgu is viewed as a potential solution, INEOS may still need to scour the transfer market for the perfect left winger.
Diomande could prove a dream signing, while Juventus winger sensation Kenan Yildiz is also another fantastic option. Ultimately, Rashford’s €30 million permanent Barcelona switch should significantly boost United’s transfer kitty, giving them the financial muscle to secure the winger they desperately need.
