Enzo Maresca believes his Chelsea side are improving with every game despite their recent poor form.
The Blues secured a much needed win on Tuesday night when they beat Jose Mourinho’s Benfica in the UEFA Champions League thanks to a Richard Rios own goal at Stamford Bridge.
It was just their second victory in the month of September, their League Cup win over Lincoln City being their only other one while they fell to defeat against Bayern Munich, Manchester United and Brighton.
“The effort was very good,” Maresca told TNT Sports after the full-time whistle. “First half I think we were better compared to the second half in the way we managed the ball and created chances. Second half we dropped.
“In the last two three games we have conceded two, three goals and it’s not possible to do that. We need to be better defensively but a clean sheet is nice.”
Chelsea were reduced to ten men for the third time in four games after Joao Pedro received a second booking late on.
“A good thing is we are improving and we can win with ten players,” Maresca added. “But I think he did not touch on the second one but the dynamic of it is that it was dangerous.
“For us it is a journey that started this season and game after game, we get better.”
Chelsea welcome an out-of-form Liverpool to the Bridge this Saturday when both teams face off in the Premier League. The west London outfit won this fixture 3-1 in May, their only victory over the Reds in their last 11 meetings.
