Mario Götze has been left out of Eintracht Frankfurt’s squad for Sunday’s derby with Mainz at 15:30. The move follows weeks of reduced status under head coach Albert Riera.

According to L'Équipe, the Spanish coach has omitted the 33-year-old on a purely sporting basis. The report adds that several local outlets said Götze was surprised by the call despite being fully fit.

Riera, who took over in late January, had already reduced Götze to a bench role. He did not leave the bench in the last two league fixtures, against St. Pauli and Heidenheim.

At the club since 2022, the 2014 World Cup winner is out of contract this summer. His standing has been questioned by the former Bordeaux coach, and the player could be tempted not to trigger the one-year extension option in his deal.

News of Götze’s omission has quickly stirred debate in Germany.
