Florent Ghisolfi has emerged as a candidate for Marseille’s sporting director role despite only recently arriving at Sunderland.

La Provence reports that the Ligue 1 club, now led by president Stéphane Richard, have hired an external agency to source candidates for the sporting director role.

Ghisolfi is said to fit many criteria thanks to his work in France and Europe, including spells at Lorient, Lens and Nice before Roma.

Sunderland’s 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend lifted them to 10th, two points off sixth-placed Chelsea, underlining a promising Premier League return.

The Frenchman joined the Black Cats in July 2025 after leaving AS Roma and has shaped recruitment alongside head coach Régis Le Bris.

There is no indication at this stage that Ghisolfi is seeking to leave Wearside.

The 39-year-old has only just begun the role and is thought to be fully committed to the club’s long-term project, with the summer window already a major focus.

Working closely with Le Bris, he is expected to be central to summer strengthening as Sunderland look to build on this season.

With the run-in under way and European qualification still possible, stability behind the scenes is viewed as vital.

European qualification would be notable for Sunderland, who have played in Europe only once, after the 1973 FA Cup win, and have finished in the top 10 of the top flight just four times in 70 years.
