Massimiliano Allegri has been appointed Napoli head coach after being dismissed by AC Milan in late May following a season that failed to secure Champions League qualification.

After weeks with little real uncertainty, Napoli confirmed his arrival on Friday on a three-year contract, according to L'Équipe.

He had been in contention for the job last summer before choosing Milan, where he lasted only one season.

At 58, Allegri will aim to challenge for the Serie A title with the Italian runners-up, whose squad is built to rival Inter Milan, champions in 2026.

The former Juventus coach, a five-time Scudetto winner, will manage a southern Italian club for the first time.

Napoli is not entirely new to him, as he spent the 1997-98 season there as a player, making seven appearances, and the team finished bottom of Serie A.
