Manchester United defender Matthijs de Ligt has revealed the one thing he did against Tottenham Hotspur that he is not happy with, despite scoring an extremely late goal to salvage a point for his side.

De Ligt saves United

United’s unbeaten streak was in serious danger of coming to a brutal end after Mathys Tel and Richarlison’s goals overturned an earlier Bryan Mbeumo strike.

Reduced to 10 men as a result of an injury sustained by Benjamin Sesko, United appeared to be headed for certain defeat.

However, De Ligt had the final say deep into stoppage time, rising highest to head in a Bruno Fernandes cross from the corner.

De Ligt’s headed finish ensured the spoils were shared between the two sides in North London. For the Dutchman, it was also a making of amends after he was beaten by Tel for Spurs’ equaliser. Tel spun De Ligt for his swivel before smashing the ball into the back of the net.

The ball also deflected off De Ligt, giving Senne Lammens no chance whatsoever of keeping it out.

After the final whistle, De Ligt spoke to TNT Sports and revealed he was not happy with his role for Tel’s goal.

De Ligt remarks

The 26-year-old said [as quoted by the United website], “I think it’s the same as last week. Last year, we lost against Forest, 1-0. Last season, we lost against Tottenham, 1-0.”

“And today, and also last week, you see that we still have the fire in our belly to get a point, to get a goal.”

De Ligt added, “Luckily, we got a point here. I think we deserve more. I mean, first goal [from Spurs], I think it’s a little bit lucky. I broke the ball; it goes in, it’s a difficult situation.”

“I’m a little bit upset about that, but in the end, I’m really proud of the team.”

“Even with 10 men, in that way, I’m really proud of the team. The season is long, so in the end, if you don’t lose these kind of games, it’s always more important.”

He explained that United deserved a bit more from the contest.
