Maxi Gómez is starting to look like a top-flight finisher again with Nacional in Uruguay after lean spells at Valencia, Trabzonspor and Cádiz. According to Superdeporte, Nacional paid 500,000 euros for the striker and the move is already paying off.

The 29-year-old had seemed on the slide after peaking at Celta de Vigo, where he scored 31 goals across two seasons to earn a switch to Valencia that also sent Santi Mina back to Balaídos after his 13-goal final campaign at Mestalla. The transfer carried an accounting value of 30 million euros, with Defensor receiving 6 million for 20 percent of his rights.

At Valencia, Gómez scored 22 goals in all competitions from 109 appearances, joining in summer 2019 and leaving during the 22/23 season. Subsequent moves failed to revive his form, and after six months without a club he played for his neighbourhood team before regaining rhythm at Defensor.

Back home, the goals have returned. He struck nine in 15 matches in the last Clausura, and has seven in 11 in the current Apertura after a brace against Liverpool lifted Nacional to fifth.

These returns mirror the levels he produced at Defensor a decade ago. His aim now is a Uruguay recall, three years on from his last call-up. His last competitive goal for the national side was the winner against Chile in 2020 South American qualifying.
