Next summer may be Napoli’s last chance to make money on Scott McTominay, with the Scotland midfielder expected to leave at the end of the season.

According to TuttoMercatoWeb, two factors point the same way. McTominay turns 30 on December 8, and his contract runs out in 2028, meaning that by next summer he will have a single year remaining. If no renewal is agreed, that is the final window in which Napoli can register a capital gain rather than lose him for nothing.

McTominay renewal demands too high for De Laurentiis

The sticking point is money. McTominay is understood to want around €8m a season, a figure that reflects his importance over the past two years but sits well above what Aurelio De Laurentiis is prepared to pay. On that basis a renewal looks unlikely.

The financial case for selling is straightforward. He is carried on the books at €7.5m and could realistically fetch between €25m and €30m.

Several clubs made enquiries over the summer, including Manchester United, who let him go cheaply in the first place, and Aston Villa, with a return to the Premier League the most likely destination.

McTominay was central to the Scudetto two years ago and has been comfortably Napoli’s best midfielder across the period since. He is currently recovering from minor heart surgery and was back in training earlier this week.
