Melker Ellborg has earned his first senior Sweden call-up, with head coach Graham Potter selecting the Sunderland goalkeeper.
Sunderland Echo reports that the 22-year-old joined from Malmo FF in January and initially acted as understudy to Robin Roefs.
Ellborg kept a clean sheet on his full debut against Leeds United, then featured against Port Vale and Brighton and Hove Albion. Roefs suffered a hamstring injury during last month’s 1-1 draw with Bournemouth, and with him racing to be fit for Sunday’s Tyne-Wear derby at St James’ Park, Ellborg could start at Newcastle United.
Potter, the ex-Chelsea boss, has included him for a World Cup qualification semi-final against Ukraine later this month as Sweden contend with injuries to Alexander Isak, Dejan Kulusevski, Viktor Johansson, Emil Holm, Jacob Widell Zetterstrom, Alexander Bernhardsson and Emil Krafth.
He will join a squad featuring Premier League stars Viktor Gyokeres, Anthony Elanga and Victor Lindelof.
Victory on 26 March would take Sweden into a home play-off final against the winner of Poland’s tie with Albania. Defeat would mean a friendly against the loser of that semi-final.
