Memphis Depay has addressed the reaction to his new track 'Don't Panic', released on Friday, which shows Parque São Jorge, Corinthians’ social headquarters, in flames and appears to reference a vice-president.
Depay made his return for the club on Thursday, setting up Breno Bidon as Corinthians eliminated Rosario Central of Argentina to reach the Copa Libertadores quarter-finals. Estudiantes are next. He is in contention on Sunday at 19:30 against Coritiba at Couto Pereira in round 24 of the Brasileirão.
The player said in a post that the lyrics were written and produced four months ago and that the clip is simply art. He asked supporters not to misread the imagery with a protest called for Saturday, stressing he opposes any kind of violence and hopes for a peaceful demonstration.
Across the song he touches on his time at Corinthians, including the “chefe” nickname from celebrations in the Copa do Brasil and Supercopa do Brasil, and tension aimed at a vice-president. Armando Mendonça is the current vice-president and has previously described his relationship with Depay as cordial.
After his holidays the 32-year-old faced a stand-off over renewal. A two-season agreement was reached, then Corinthians pulled back citing financial issues in an official note. Talks resumed last week amid fan pressure on the board led by Osmar Stabile, with adjusted terms approved by the Conselho de Orientação (Cori), extending his deal to July 2028.
