Memphis Depay has travelled to join the Netherlands for the World Cup with his Corinthians future unresolved, finances the main obstacle.
According to Globo.com, he is willing to cut pay and alter the contract model, and talks have progressed but are not closed. The club lack funds from July and hope for corporate backing to cover wages, which his camp views as unlikely.
Deals signed in September 2024 under former president Augusto Melo set R$ 28,353,783 in salary and the same in image rights, about R$ 2.57 million per month. Further terms add a signing-on payment, performance and title bonuses.
The package has provoked internal resistance, particularly among political factions, who see poor value even on reduced terms. Corinthians also owe R$ 42 million in unpaid bonuses across the past two years.
Asked about that debt, Depay pushed back at the question, then said any renewal and negotiation would be private. He spoke after a 2-0 defeat by Platense in the Conmebol Libertadores.
His camp are open to spreading the R$ 42 million across a new deal running until mid 2028. His FPF registration lasts until 20 June and his contract runs to 31 July.
Depay says he loves the club, feels his work is not finished and wants to stay, and he has recovered from a right thigh muscle injury before departing for the tournament.
