MEN: INEOS perform 11th-hour U-turn on left-back after agreeing permanent deal | OneFootball

Manchester United have reportedly U-turned on their decision to sell Harry Amass permanently before tonight’s deadline.

However, Manchester Evening News reports the youngster is still expected to leave on loan.

Burnley had been advancing in talks over a £3.5 million deal for Amass, but that has seemingly been put on ice in the last few hours.

Meanwhile, United supporters are perplexed by INEOS’ decision to part ways with the 19-year-old, given he could provide some much-needed cover for Luke Shaw across the campaign.

United did the same in the summer of 2024 when they facilitated Alvaro Carreras’ sale to Benfica for just £5 million despite targeting a left-back. Last July, Real Madrid shelled out £43m to bring him to the Santiago Bernabéu after he had become one of the most coveted full-backs in Europe.

Although Amass only has seven senior United appearances to his name as things stand, he did gain crucial first-team experience with Sheffield Wednesday last season and didn’t once look out of place in their setup.

In an ideal world, another loan would’ve perhaps benefitted his development, but what harm could it do keeping him at Old Trafford and letting him stake his claim the way Kobbie Mainoo did?

It’s thought INEOS are still frantically scouring the market for a stop-gap addition to bring in today.

Should they fail to get a signing over the line, Michael Carrick will have to depend on Shaw, who’s been United’s most injury-prone player of the last decade, as well as right-backs Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui to deputise.

Patrick Dorgu has occupied a more attacking role on the wing since his return from injury in May, but he may also have to revert this term to reinforce Carrick’s options in the backline.
