In his first press conference as the new Manchester United interim manager, Carrick was asked for his reaction to Keane’s comments on The Overlap’s ‘Stick to Football’ podcast, where the former United captain remarked that Carrick’s wife Lisa had a “big mouth”.

Keane appeared to be referring to a tweet posted by Carrick’s wife back in 2014 that took aim at the Irishman for his criticism of her husband following a 2-0 to Olympiacos in the Champions League.

“Roy Keane what a ****, says anything to provoke a reaction,” the tweet read, before she quickly deleted it, following up by saying: “Deleted my tweet... Emotions got the better of me.”

Keane joked that Carrick’s wife could take over the reins at Old Trafford should her husband not perform well in his new position.

“His wife can always come in [if Carrick doesn't do well], because she's got a bit of a big mouth sometimes,” Keane said. “She's probably doing the team talk.”

Keane’s comments came while the panel of pundits - Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher, Jill Scott and Ian Wright alongside him - discussed Carrick’s appointment as United’s head coach until the end of the current campaign.

Carrick’s first game in charge will come against Manchester City on Saturday in a lunchtime Manchester derby.

United then travel to Arsenal before facing Fulham.

Asked for his response to Keane’s comments, Carrick responded: “It didn’t bother me.

“They’re not putting more pressure on me. I don’t feel that. There are plenty of opinions around, some positive, some not too much. It’s totally irrelevant in terms of what I focus on.

“I know what we want to improve on, how we want to work with the players. There’s a lot that can be said, it’s the way of the world.

“I’m not going to pay too much attention to that. For me, the players and staff it’s a focus on how we’re going to succeed.”

It is the second time that Carrick has stepped into the Old Trafford dugout in a caretaker capacity, after he led the side to two wins and a draw after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had been sacked in November 2021.

He went on to manage Middlesbrough in the Championship, but left the Teesside club last summer.
