The Northern Irishman has guided the Lancashire side to safety in the Championship

Blackburn Rovers' season has been one of extremely mixed fortunes, but they have now seen their Championship status guaranteed ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

As has been the case in recent times at Ewood Park, Rovers have followed up a season in which they almost made the second tier play-offs by being immersed in a battle to avoid a second relegation to League One within the last 10 years.

The club's recent stagnation under The Venky's has been well-documented, with cash not exactly flowing in this part of the world when it comes to making wholesale changes to the playing squad.

As a result of further disappointment, Valerien Ismael was unable to last the entirety of his first full season with Rovers, as he was dismissed on February 2nd after a 1-0 defeat to Hull City, which saw the club sit in the relegation zone on a total of 29 points from as many games.

The hierarchy then opted to make an intriguing move when sourcing his replacement, as it was confirmed that Northern Ireland boss, Michael O'Neill, would take up a dual role until the end of the season, with it unknown as to whether his home country would secure qualification to the FIFA World Cup at the time.

Unfortunately for them, they fell short in the play-off semi-final to Italy last month, and since then, it has been full focus on ensuring Blackburn's Championship survival for the 56-year-old.

And, after a recent upsurge in form, which has seen them lose just four of his 14 matches in charge, their safety was rubber-stamped with a 3-1 victory against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane - a game which they were 3-0 up at the break.

Rather unsurprisingly, lots of post-match discourse related to O'Neill's immediate future in East Lancashire, and he provided his latest understanding of matters.

Earlier this month, it had been reported that Rovers would have to pay the Northern Ireland FA a sum of £250,000 if they were to buy O'Neill out of his international contract.

After returning as his country's manager in December 2022 following his exit from Stoke City, the Portadown native signed a five-and-a-half year contract until the summer of 2028, and the hierarchy across the Irish Sea are still hoping to retain his services, whilst Rovers chiefs are claimed to have set out a new deal for O'Neill which would run until June 2029.

Blackburn's interim boss revealed after Northern Ireland's defeat in Bergamo last month that he would "revert" to his permanent role, and he has since given further clarity on where he stands at this moment in time.

“Of course, those discussions will take place. You know, the club have a decision to make themselves and what direction they want to go," he said.

“I’m a contracted manager, so the situation doesn’t really change. I suppose, for any club if they wanted to me as their manager, they would have to go through the IFA, they would have to meet the terms of the release clause, and I would have to want to do it.

“This was a loan and I suppose, given where we are, it’ll be deemed as a successful loan," O'Neill added.

“I’ve enjoyed the club. There’s a lot of really, really good people at the club and I’m sure conversations will happen one way or the other in the weeks ahead.”

Blackburn Rovers need stability regardless of who is in charge at Ewood Park in 2026/27

Having lacked stability for some time, it is the one aspect which Blackburn have been crying out for in recent times after going through four different bosses in just over two years.

Given his short-term impact and wealth of experience, it is no surprise that the hierarchy are desperate to retain O'Neill's services in the long-term, but it also remains to be seen if he has his heart set on helping Northern Ireland qualify for the UEFA European Championship 2028, which takes place in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland, albeit no matches will be hosted in Belfast.

Of course, if he was to exit the club, it would be a blow and leave another feeling of uncertainty amongst supporters as to what the future holds.
