FLW look at three players Plymouth Argyle could push to sign this summer.
Plymouth Argyle will be hoping to secure an immediate return to the Championship next season as their relegation to League One was confirmed.
The Pilgrims gave a valiant fightback in the second half of the season, but the damage was done under former boss Wayne Rooney, who was appointed last summer.
With their two-season spell in the second tier now over, several clubs may look to capitalise on their situation by targeting some of their standout players.
However, Plymouth - and Miron Muslic, should he remain at the helm - will already be eyeing a promotion push and Football League World have identified three potential summer signings that could bolster their chances.
Most Plymouth supporters will be expecting Ryan Hardie to depart the club this summer with his numbers over the past two seasons sufficient for a continued chance in the second tier.
If the Scotsman does depart, then the Pilgrims would need a new addition up front, and they should look no further than Alfie May.
The 31-year-old striker has been League One’s leading goalscorer over the past four seasons and although he is set to move to the Championship with Birmingham City, his place in the squad remains uncertain. With Jay Stansfield established as one of the Blues’ standout forwards and Che Adams reportedly a transfer target, there may be limited opportunities for May to feature regularly.
Plymouth should look to take advantage of this situation and move for the former Cheltenham Town man, who is closing in on the 100-goal mark in the third tier.
A reliable striker is, of course, essential for any side with title ambitions, and if Plymouth are to challenge at the top end of League One, they’ll need a finisher of May’s calibre. Given his age and likely squad status at St Andrew’s, he could come at a cut-price fee - though they may face competition for his signature.
Next up, we have a concrete link for Plymouth in the form of Aberdeen's Jack MacKenzie.
The left-back is out of contract at Pittodrie and, according to the Daily Record, the Pilgrims have been alerted to his potential availability.
In a similar fashion to the Hardie predicament, Argyle are likely to be on the lookout for a left-back this summer, with Bali Mumba expected to attract interest. MacKenzie would represent a solid option with over 120 appearances for Aberdeen and a challenge in Devon may attract him.
He has been left out of the side in recent weeks, though this may be linked to ongoing uncertainty surrounding his contract situation at the club.
A more defensively-minded full-back, MacKenzie could offer valuable support to Muslic in establishing a solid defensive foundation - something Argyle excelled at during their 2022–23 promotion-winning campaign.
While their League One status may complicate any potential deal, if the club can tempt the 25-year-old with the promise of a promotion push, there’s every reason to believe he could be persuaded to make the move to Home Park.
Moving across to a potential loan addition they could make in the summer, we have George Abbott of Tottenham Hotspur.
The 19-year-old recently won the EFL Goal of the Season for his strike against Accrington Stanley for Notts County. However, past that unbelievable finish, the youngster has been a rock in the heart of midfield for the Magpies.
For Plymouth, he would represent a stellar addition - a player who could slot in seamlessly alongside someone like Adam Randell. A classic box-to-box midfielder, he has ranked in the top 10% of his peers this season for tackles won, interceptions, recoveries, blocks, touches, and chances created.
Abbott clearly has a future destined for the top level, but another loan move would do his development no harm at all.
Championship clubs are likely to be monitoring the Spurs youngster, but if Muslic can successfully pitch his project to both Abbott and Tottenham’s recruitment team, Plymouth may just be able to secure his signature.
Arguably the most exciting of the three targets, Abbott’s next move is certainly one to watch closely.
