Sunderland have received a fresh update on Simon Adingra, with Monaco deciding against activating their purchase option. According to Nice-Matin, the Ligue 1 club will not take up a permanent deal.
The clause attached to his loan was said to be between five million and 10 million euros, roughly £4.3m to £8.5m, though reports at the time suggested a figure closer to £17m.
Adingra joined Monaco on loan from Sunderland in January and made 17 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals and providing two assists. The Ivory Coast international was largely deployed as a wing-back and showed attacking flashes alongside inconsistency.
His defensive work was criticised and his form swung between strong and quieter displays. Monaco’s stance means he is set to return to Sunderland this summer, where Florent Ghisolfi and Régis Le Bris will weigh up his next steps.
The winger has remained involved with Ivory Coast, named in their World Cup squad and coming on in the 74th minute of a 2-1 defeat against Germany. He missed their AFCON campaign last season.
Sunderland’s planning will determine whether he is reintegrated, moved on again or considered within the wider Premier League group for the new season.
