Sunderland have been handed a fresh update on Simon Adingra, with Nice-Matin reporting that Monaco will not trigger their option to buy, leaving the winger set to return this summer.

The reported buy clause was put at between €five million and €10 million, though earlier reports around the deal suggested a figure nearer £17 million.

Adingra joined Monaco on loan from Sunderland in January and made 17 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals and providing two assists. The Ivory Coast international showed flashes of quality but his form was inconsistent.

Used mainly as a wing-back, the 24-year-old carried an attacking threat at times, yet his defensive work drew scrutiny and performances fluctuated between strong and disappointing.

Monaco’s stance means Sunderland’s hierarchy, including Florent Ghisolfi and Régis Le Bris, must now decide whether to reintegrate him or move him on again during the window.

His international involvement has continued, with a World Cup call-up and a 74th-minute substitute appearance in a 2-1 defeat to Germany, although he missed last season’s AFCON campaign.

Sunderland are reassessing their squad and will weigh Adingra’s role on Wearside as plans for the new season take shape.
