According to SPORT, Florentino Pérez and José Mourinho have reached a full agreement for the Portuguese to return to the Santiago Bernabéu once the club's current election process concludes.

The move is seen within the club as a direct response to a fractured dressing room, with Pérez seeking a strong figure to reimpose order and competitiveness.

In recent weeks, alternatives have fallen away, with Jürgen Klopp not planning a short-term return after Liverpool and Lionel Scaloni, Didier Deschamps and Mauricio Pochettino tied up until after the World Cup.

Recent events have accelerated Pérez's plans. Although Mourinho's 2013 exit was fraught, the president has long valued him and recently told Josep Pedrerol he raised Madrid's competitiveness and that the club later won several Champions Leagues in succession.

Pérez brought forward elections at a contentious Tuesday press conference, a move widely seen as a bid to secure another term without serious opposition. 23 May is the final day to file candidacies.

Businessman Enrique Riquelme is unlikely to meet the requirements in time and there is little expectation of a rival. In that case, Pérez would be proclaimed automatically once the deadline passes.

Once the process is resolved, Madrid plan to activate a new sporting project, with Mourinho's appointment the first step. The aim is to go official in the week of the final league round, when Madrid finish at home against Athletic Club.
