Moussa Niakhaté, 30, said CAF’s ruling that confirmed Morocco as African champions has not changed his view, speaking on the eve of Olympique Lyonnais’s Europa League last-16 second leg against Celta Vigo.
According to Get French Football News, CAF ruled in Morocco’s favour after a Royal Moroccan Football Federation appeal over a final marred by numerous incidents, then two months later declared Senegal, the Lions of Teranga, to have lost by default, confirming the hosts’ victory.
Niakhaté said he would not elaborate out of respect for the club and with Thursday’s crucial match in mind. He referenced his social media post, a photo with the trophy, and said nothing had changed for him since January. He added he would speak in due course, for now he is focused on OL.
The subject is likely to surface again soon, with Senegal scheduled to meet Peru at the Stade de France, then The Gambia, on 28 and 31 March.
A key figure under Pape Thiaw, the former Nottingham Forest defender started six of Senegal’s seven matches during their run to the African title in mid-January.
