David Moyes says he would like more clarification on why Everton were deducted points but Chelsea were only fined for a breach of the Premier League’s rules.
Everton will host Chelsea at Hill Dickinson Stadium before the international break, and there may be some extra tension in the air.
Chelsea were fined £10.75 million and handed a suspended transfer ban earlier in the week after they admitted to making almost £50 million in undisclosed payments under previous owner Roman Abramovich.
Whilst it is the largest fine that the Premier League have handed out, the club have avoided any sporting sanctions, such as a points deduction. There has been criticism for this, especially from Everton and Nottingham Forest fans, whose clubs have previously received heavy points deductions for breaching the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
Asked about his reaction to the fine, Moyes said the explanation given by the Premier League was not clear as to why Chelsea avoided a sporting sanction.
“I would actually like to hear a bit more about it before I’ve probably make too much of a comment,” said the manager.
“I’m expecting more of the details and why. This is nothing against Chelsea. I wasn’t at Everton during the times when we were deducted a huge points number. And also I wasn’t at Chelsea when things were happening there, so we could do with finding out a little bit more.
“I don’t think they’ve explained it well enough in the reasoning why that is what the fine was.”
Moyes’ side will host Chelsea knowing that a win could put them within three points of the top five, despite their most recent 2-0 loss to Arsenal.
“I think the players at the moment have got a bit of confidence,” said Moyes. “I think they’ve showed it and I thought they showed it in their performance at Arsenal and the way they played.
“Certainly after the opening 15 minutes, I thought we’d done very well. But we got nicked at the end and we were disappointed with it.
“I think we’re all looking forward to getting Chelsea and seeing what we can do in the next game.”
Meanwhile, Moyes hopes to have James Tarkowski and Jarrad Branthwaite available for the game.
“Both hopefully will be in and around the squad tomorrow,” he said.
