Two of the group stage’s most impressive sides meet in the early hours of Tuesday morning as Netherlands and Morocco square off at Estadio Monterrey in the World Cup last 32, with a place in the round of 16 and a tie against either Brazil or Japan at stake.
Both nations finished their groups with seven points — Netherlands topping Group F, Morocco second in Group C behind Brazil on goal difference. Netherlands have not lost a World Cup match in normal or extra time since the 2010 final against Spain, a run stretching to 15 games.
Morocco, meanwhile, arrive on an extraordinary unbeaten run of 32 matches, having reached the semi-finals at Qatar 2022 and demonstrated once more at this tournament that they belong among the elite. This is the standout fixture of the last 32 — and the only previous competitive meeting between the two, at the 1994 World Cup, ended 2–1 to the Dutch.
Ronald Koeman receives a double fitness boost with Denzel Dumfries and Brian Brobbey both passed fit after carrying slight knocks through the group stage. The only change from the XI that beat Tunisia is Micky van de Ven returning to left back in place of Nathan Ake, restoring the Tottenham Hotspur defender’s pace and physicality to the defensive unit.
Brobbey continues as the central striker, with Memphis Depay, Justin Kluivert and Crysencio Summerville available from the bench. Frenkie de Jong, Tijjani Reijnders and Ryan Gravenberch retain their midfield places. Virgil van Dijk captains the side.
Mohamed Ouahbi has no injury concerns and makes several changes from the rotated XI used against Haiti. Noussair Mazraoui, Issa Diop, Ayyoub Bouaddi and Azzedine Ounahi all return to the starting lineup. Achraf Hakimi and Brahim Díaz continue in their established roles.
Ismael Saibari leads the line once again, having scored in all three of Morocco’s group games — the first African player to score in his nation’s first three World Cup group matches. Bilal El Khannouss and Neil El Aynaoui also retain their places.
Koeman’s side have been among the group stage’s most clinical attackers, scoring ten goals across three matches. After a 2–2 opening draw with Japan, where they surrendered a late lead, they found their rhythm emphatically, dismantling Sweden 5–1 and beating Tunisia 3–1 to top Group F.
Brobbey’s introduction to the starting lineup against Sweden proved transformative, his physicality and link play giving Gakpo, Reijnders and Malen the space to inflict damage. The concern remains defensive — the Dutch are yet to keep a clean sheet at this tournament and have not done so in any of their last seven matches.
Morocco have been one of the tournament’s most compelling stories. Their 1–1 draw against Brazil on matchday one was a demonstration of controlled defensive organisation and sharp counter-attacking. They dominated large spells and only conceded to a moment of individual brilliance from Vinicius Junior.
Victories over Scotland (1–0) and Haiti (4–2) followed, with Ouahbi using the Haiti game to rotate and rest key players. Saibari has been the standout individual, while Ayyoub Bouaddi’s midfield display against Brazil drew widespread praise. Morocco enter this fixture on an unbeaten run of 32 matches.
Netherlands predicted XI (4-3-3): Verbruggen; Dumfries, Van Hecke, Van Dijk, Van de Ven; Gravenberch, De Jong, Reijnders; Malen, Brobbey, Gakpo
Morocco predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Bounou; Hakimi, Diop, Riad, Mazraoui; El Aynaoui, Bouaddi; Díaz, Ounahi, El Khannouss; Saibari
