Newcastle United will be without Yoane Wissa and Jacob Ramsey for their Premier League clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers at St James’ Park on Saturday.

Wissa had been expected to make his debut against Wolves, but manager Eddie Howe has confirmed he is unavailable for selection.

Howe said. “I saw him for the first time yesterday, and he is still feeling the effects of the injury he picked up before coming off on international duty. We will have to see how he progresses.”

Howe praised Wissa’s record in England’s top flight, suggesting he will be a key figure once available. “He is an established Premier League goalscorer, which is very difficult to recruit,” Howe added.

“He has real qualities, has had an outstanding few years, and has always been a difficult player for us to face. I really admire the journey he has been on, and I am confident he will adjust well here.”

Ramsey is also sidelined after suffering an ankle problem in last month’s draw with Leeds United, and Howe admitted he will be absent until after the next international break.

“It is a big blow for us,” he said. “But Joelinton has trained well, and it is a boost to have him back, because he is such an important player for us.”

There could be a debut for record signing Nick Woltemade, who arrived from Stuttgart earlier this summer. Howe was encouraged by the German striker’s first sessions.

“He has trained well, settled quickly, and shown his qualities already,” Howe said. “He has a great character and has not looked out of place at all.”

The manager also welcomed the appointment of David Hopkinson as the club’s new chief executive, describing him as ‘a great person with real energy’ who can help drive Newcastle forward off the pitch.

Newcastle are still seeking their first win of the season after two goalless away draws and a late defeat to Liverpool.

Wolves are bottom of the table without a point, but Howe knows his side must improve in front of goal.

“Defensively, we have been strong, but we need to find that clinical edge,” he said. “With the games coming thick and fast now, every player will have a part to play.”
