James Trafford has once again emerged as the primary transfer target for Newcastle United this summer, with fresh contacts established between the two clubs involved.
The Magpies attempted to acquire Trafford from Burnley during the last summer transfer window, but were ultimately beaten to the player’s signature by Manchester City – who had a release clause available to be activated in the his Turf Moor contract.

The 23-year-old rejoined the Etihad Stadium club under the impression that he would be Pep Guardiola’s first choice in goal, selecting the No.1 shirt in the process. However, City would go on to make the signing of Gianluigi Donnarumma, restricting Trafford largely to Cup duties.
In the back-up role at City last season, James Trafford amassed just 17 appearances, but played a vital role in the club winning both available domestic cup competitions and keeping a clean sheet at Wembley in both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup finals.
Despite some suggesting incoming boss Enzo Maresca could have a decision to make in terms of whether to side with a more capable goalkeeper when it comes to ball-playing, as such integrating Trafford into first-choice, the Englishman has a decision to make on his future.
Now, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Newcastle United have established fresh contact with Manchester City to express a desire to recruit the club’s back-up choice goalkeeper and England international, James Trafford.
It is insisted that the two sides are yet to enter formal negotiations over the player, and the situation is only further complicated by Trafford wanting to hold off deciding on his future until returning from the World Cup.
Manchester City eyeing former academy goalkeeper as James Trafford replacement
The City Football Academy (CFA) graduate has continuously spoken openly about his position at the club, most recently recognising the support he has felt from Manchester City fans as a homegrown talent.
Speaking to the club’s official website in light of the last campaign, Trafford said, “I do feel love from the fans and feel great about that. I get great love from the fans – the core kind of support and very normal Mancunians. I believe somehow I maybe resonate with them a bit.”
He continued, “I’m relatable, calm, honest northern lad and I think they see that. So I do feel a lot of love, whether it’s on social media, when I’m seeing them out and about, or whether it’s during games. It’s really nice.”
But on the subject of being the club’s second-choice shot-stopper, Trafford said in February, “It wasn’t what I expected.
“I tried to guard against the situation happening, but it’s the reality. I know every time I play, I’ve got to give it my best shot and try to win and try to improve. That’s the current situation I’m in.”
It remains to be seen whether Enzo Maresca will be keen to see Trafford in action first-hand during the club’s pre-season tour of Far-East Asia, with the Englishman expected to arrive later due to his FIFA World Cup commitments.
