The Magpies have long viewed the 23-year-old England international as their primary long-term solution between the sticks and could now make a summer move to bring him to St James’ Park.

While Newcastle have recently signed Stade de Reims’ Ewen Jaouen, the hierarchy sees the young Frenchman as a development project rather than an immediate starter for Eddie Howe.

Trafford returned to Manchester City from Burnley last summer expecting to compete for the starting role, but the surprise deadline-day arrival of Gianluigi Donnarumma saw him frozen out of Premier League action.

Nonetheless, Trafford performed admirably when called upon, starting both the FA Cup and EFL Cup final victories during City’s domestic double campaign.

Manchester City are open to sanctioning a sale this summer, one year after Newcastle previously fell short in their pursuit of the England international.

Currently part of England’s World Cup squad, the ‘reliable’ and ‘fantastic’ Trafford is seeking a resolution regarding his future after returning from international duty.

It remains to be seen whether Newcastle are willing to wait until then. Regardless, Newcastle are already in contact with Manchester City over a potential move as the Magpies step up their summer business.
