Eddie Howe has received a timely lift before Sunday’s Tyne-Wear derby, with Dan Burn avoiding a ban after staying out of the book in Newcastle United’s 1-0 win over Chelsea. According to Sunderland Echo, he can no longer be suspended under the 10-yellow-card threshold before the cut-off.
Premier League regulations trigger a two-match ban at 10 cautions across the opening 32 fixtures. Burn is on seven yellows and, with Newcastle 30 games in, he cannot now reach the limit before the deadline.
It means Howe can select the experienced centre-back at the Stadium of Light without disciplinary concerns. One midfielder must still tread carefully, with Joelinton sitting on eight bookings.
If Joelinton is booked against Sunderland or in the following league match at Crystal Palace, he would reach 10 and serve a two-game ban. No other Newcastle players are close to the threshold, and club captain Bruno Guimaraes, who will miss the derby through injury, has five bookings.
On the Sunderland side, Enzo Le Fée could feature. Régis Le Bris said Angulo and Le Fée suffered training setbacks, forcing another reshuffle and adding uncertainty before the derby.
Le Bris indicated Nilson Angulo is likely out for four to six weeks, while Le Fée might return sooner and he hopes to have him for Newcastle. He added Wilson Isidor is managing an issue, which is why he was not risked late on as Sunderland chased the game after Yankuba Minteh’s second-half goal.
