Newcastle United are interested in recruiting the services of SC Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi this summer, according to the Daily Mail journalist Craig Hope.

Newcastle have scouts at the World Cup and the Magpies would love to bring the Switzerland international to the St James Park club as manager Eddie Howe prepares for next season.

Manzambi has been one of the best players at the tournament in North America, with three goals and one assist to his name in three appearances.

Newcastle could do with his creativity and verve in the middle of the park, but they will face competition for the Swiss.

Switzerland are preparing take on Algeria in the round of 32 of the World Cup, and Manzambi will be raring to go and impress.

The 20-year-old is primarily a central midfielder but has been deployed on the right wing at the tournament so far, and his finishing has caught the eye of the Magpies.

Manzambi scored seven goals and six assists across the Bundesliga and Europa League last term, and Howe could do with his impact in the final third.

Newcastle are desperate to challenge for a top-five finish in the Premier League next season after an underwhelming campaign last season.

They finished 12th in the league table last term and will need to recruit quality players this summer not to repeat last season’s failures.

The Magpies could be in need of new midfielders in the coming weeks with Arsenal looking to sign Bruno Guimaraes, while Sandro Tonali is a serious target for Tottenham Hotspur.

Manzambi could be a perfect replacement for either player and fans will hope he can replicate his World Cup heroics at Newcastle if he joins them.
