Newcastle United are said to have ‘intensified’ their pursuit of Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara, who was linked with Sunderland ahead of January. TeamTalk reports the Magpies are ‘more likely’ to land a deal worth about £55m to £64m in the summer. The report also suggests Newcastle could be viewed as a more viable stepping stone if Sandro Tonali leaves.

Sunderland were previously credited with asking Monaco about a surprise move as they explored pairing Camara with Senegal team-mate Habib Diarra at the Stadium of Light. Interest from Manchester United and Arsenal had also been mentioned at the time.

The 22-year-old has built a reputation as one of Ligue 1’s most consistent midfielders after standout spells with Metz and Monaco. Although talk of a switch to Wearside has cooled, he has continued to be linked with Liverpool and Chelsea. Clubs in Spain and Paris Saint-Germain are also said to be keen.

“For now, I am really happy at Monaco. I feel really at ease here: the players are kind and ambitious, and I have a manager who trusts me. I follow the Premier League a lot – everyone does. I’m not thinking about changing clubs but we will see what happens at the end of the season.” He said this in December in an interview with The Guardian.

His comments indicated any decision would come after the season, while Newcastle continue to track him.
