Neymar’s father has urged him to keep playing after the forward announced his international retirement following Brazil’s 2-1 last-16 defeat by Norway. L'Équipe reports that Neymar Sr wants his son to carry on.

After the World Cup exit, the 34-year-old said his Brazil career was over, 16 years after his debut. He reflected that it began at the MetLife Stadium in 2010 in a friendly against the United States, and that it ended there.

On Tuesday, Neymar Sr addressed his son on Instagram, asking him not to quit yet. He urged him to find the joy of playing again, to smile on the pitch, and noted that he is healthy and has been given another chance to do what he loves.

Frequently injured, Neymar played 37 minutes across three matches at the tournament after late doubts over his fitness. He scored a consolation penalty against Norway but could not tilt the tie in Brazil’s favour. His father told him not to worry about tomorrow, to live in the present, train, smile and play, and to cherish his family.

Even so, his career appears to be nearing its end, with years of physical setbacks. Back at Santos since January 2025, his contract runs until December and there is currently no prospect of an extension.
