The federation announced in a medical bulletin that Yéremy Pino and Nico Williams remain in the World Cup picture, although uncertainty is greater for the Athletic Club player.

Imaging has ruled out a fracture for Pino, who has been diagnosed with an acromioclavicular sprain, so the feared break that would have ended his tournament has been avoided.

Williams has a right adductor muscle injury sustained after a heavy challenge against Uruguay. It is not a relapse of a prior problem, which is encouraging, but his muscular history this season means caution is required.

Both issues are classified as moderate and their availability will depend on how they progress. The medical view does not rule either player out for the rest of the competition, and there is a chance they feature again, with the final on 19 July in New Jersey.

The injuries are of a different nature. Pino might be able to push through if necessary, potentially with an injection, whereas Williams’s muscular problem allows for no risks to avoid a tear.

Williams left the stadium limping noticeably after facing Uruguay and, factoring in recovery time and his dip in form, the likelihood of using him again at this World Cup appears minimal.
