Niko Kovač reportedly dissuaded Bayern from signing Jamie Gittens last summer | OneFootball

Sport Bild reports that Borussia Dortmund head coach Niko Kovač advised Bayern Munich against signing Jamie Gittens last summer.

Before the recently concluded 2025-26 season, Bayern were in pursuit of Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams. A deal was close, but the Spain international chose to stay with the Basque club and signed a new contract.

Attention then shifted to Gittens, though members of the supervisory board, including Uli Hoeneß and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, were sceptical.

A club employee contacted Kovač for an honest assessment, and he is said to have made clear he did not view the English youngster as professional enough to succeed at Bayern.

Bayern subsequently dropped their pursuit of Gittens and focused on Luis Díaz instead, while Gittens went on to join Chelsea.
