Nilson Angulo has been named in Ecuador’s World Cup squad this summer, with the tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada. According to Sunderland Echo, the Sunderland forward earned selection after an impressive end to the campaign.
The 22-year-old has 12 caps and this will be his first World Cup.
Angulo joined from Anderlecht for around £17.5 million late in January and was eased into Regis Le Bris’s plans.
He made nine appearances, featuring in the final three matches, including starts at Everton and against Chelsea. Sunderland have qualified for the Europa League next season.
Earlier in the season, Le Bris said he thought Angulo could make a success of his time in England, stressing the need for adaptation and his physical qualities for the Premier League.
He noted a tough outing at Bournemouth was followed by a positive response, adding that coming off the bench had suited him and that starting would take time.
Angulo joins a squad that includes Enner Valencia and Kevin Rodriguez in attack, with Moises Caicedo and Piero Hincapie also selected.
