Celtic booked their spot in the Scottish Cup final on Sunday, eventually blowing St Mirren away 6-2 after extra time at Hampden Park. Benjamin Nygren netted his 20th goal of the season to cap off a massive performance. Martin O’Neill’s side now face Dunfermline Athletic, managed by former Celtic captain Neil Lennon, at Hampden on 23 May, in what promises to be one of the most emotional finals in recent memory.
Speaking to Celtic TV after the match, Nygren was excited with the result while giving an honest account of a chaotic 120 minutes. The Swedish forward called the game very strange, noting that Celtic started with plenty of energy, pressing St Mirren high and building some real early momentum.
Daizen Maeda’s opener, which Nygren praised as amazing pressing, set the tone in the first minute. Celtic went into the break 2-0 up through Anthony Ralston, before Mikael Mandron dragged St Mirren back into it with two goals, the second coming in the 91st minute to force extra time.
Nygren admitted he thought Celtic would have closed the game out in 90 minutes, but once extra time started, things just clicked. Four goals flew in during a frantic six-minute spell, with Kelechi Iheanacho grabbing a brace, Luke McCowan adding a third, and Nygren himself tucking away the sixth. The Swede, now Celtic’s top scorer this term, made it clear he joined the club to win silverware, and Sunday’s win puts him one step closer.
Speaking to Celtic TV after the match, Nygren said: “I feel very good! I’m very happy to get the win, and that we managed to get into the final, in the end.
“It was a very strange game, especially now when I think of it afterwards. We started the game really well and really put a lot of pressure on them.
“The first goal, it’s amazing pressing from Daizen. Then we lost a little bit of the intensity in the end of the first half, and again with the second half.
“I thought we would win it in normal time, but then they scored before the end. Then I don’t know what happened! We scored four goals so fast and that killed the game in extra-time.
‘It was an amazing atmosphere when we scored the goals, but I’m so happy that we made it.’
“I’m enjoying it a lot here. I just try to stay in the moment and enjoy it as much as possible. In the end, I came here to win trophies, so that is the goal.”

I feel they definitely can, and the momentum is on their side. Celtic are currently well-placed in the Scottish Premiership title race while keeping their cup run alive, making a domestic double a very real possibility. This win felt even bigger because Celtic had lost the League Cup final to St Mirren back in December, so Sunday’s dominant response was about more than just progressing.
O’Neill has taken his squad through a lot of injury trouble, rotating the side but still finding high-quality performances when it matters most. Nygren’s 20 goals are a huge return for a player who only joined this season. Celtic now meet a Dunfermline side that won against Falkirk on penalties on Saturday. While the final is never a guarantee, Celtic’s depth and motivation make them heavy favourites heading into 23 May.
Celtic definitely have what it takes to finish the season with both trophies.
