Grégory Lorenzi has officially succeeded Medhi Benatia as Marseille’s Sporting Director, the Ligue 1 side has announced on Thursday. Lorenzi has left Brest after a 10-year tenure which saw the Bretons go from Ligue 2 to the Champions League’s heights. Lorenzi was a man in demand. Initially, he had an agreement to join OGC Nice, but Marseille swooped in to steer him to spearhead Les Phocéens‘ sporting policy.

The 42-year-old is confronted to a mammoth task: bring stability to Ligue 1’s most unstable club. “OM are a historic club, very special, very popular, very exciting”, Lorenzi said to L’Equipe. “It’s up to us to find the best balance between the sporting project and our economic reality.” Marseille have missed out on Champions League football next season after a disappointing second half of the campaign. They’ll have to settle for the Europa League group stage next season.

It remains to be seen whether Lorenzi sticks with current head coach Habib Beye. However, the former Newcastle United right-back is expected to depart with Marseille targetting a move for departing Lille manager Bruno Genesio.
