“Real Madrid would like to express its gratitude and affection to one of the greatest legends of our club and of world football.”

End of an illustrious career

Carvajal joined the Real Madrid academy at the age of 10 years and has been at the club for 23 years, barring the one season in between when he was sold to Bayer Leverkusen and re-signed a year later.

The 34-year-old right-back has played 450 times for Los Blancos across all competitions at the first-team level and won a whopping 27 trophies, which includes six UEFA Champions League crowns and four La Liga titles.

However, injuries had limited his game-time this season and with Alvaro Arbeloa preferring Trent Alexander-Arnold as his preferred starter, the captain has barely played regularly in recent months.

With his contract expiring on June 30, Real Madrid opted not to renew and Carvajal will now be on his way out, with this week’s game against Athletic Club set to be his final one in the royal white jersey.

Florentino Perez pays tribute

As part of the official announcement, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez paid a touching tribute to Carvajal, saying:

“Dani Carvajal is a legend and a symbol of Real Madrid and its youth academy.

“His image alongside our beloved and unforgettable Alfredo Di Stéfano laying the foundation stone of Real Madrid City will forever remain in the hearts of all Madridistas and in the history of our club.”

Concluding, he added: “Carvajal has always exemplified the values of Real Madrid. This is and always will be his home.”

With this, Real Madrid will be bidding goodbye to the first captain of the team for the sixth summer in a row, following Sergio Ramos, Marcelo, Karim Benzema, Nacho Fernandez, and Luka Modric.
