The forward is their joint-top scorer with a tally of 13 goals as the Tigers compete for a play-off place in the Championship.

Sergej Jakirovic’s side are currently inside the top six, and are on the verge of earning their first shot at promotion back to the Premier League since coming back into the division with the League One title in 2021.

McBurnie made the move to the MKM Stadium in the summer after his departure from Spanish side Las Palmas.

He contributed three goals and six assists in La Liga, but it wasn’t enough to prevent relegation, which led to his return to English football with Hull.

The 29-year-old previously spent five seasons with Sheffield United, also playing for Swansea City and Barnsley previously in his career.

Hull are hosting a retro day as part of their clash with Sheffield Wednesday this afternoon.

To promote the event, the club’s official X account has asked supporters what they’ll be wearing as part of the celebrations.

The account also posted a picture of McBurnie wearing the Hull kit from the 2015/16 campaign, which culminated in the Tigers earning promotion to the Premier League in the play-off final at the expense of Sheffield Wednesday, which fans at his former club, Sheffield United, will also be able to appreciate.

The two Yorkshire sides met at Wembley Stadium for a place in the top flight, and it was Mohamed Diamé’s goal in the 72nd minute that separated them at the final whistle.

Hull finished fourth in the Championship table, while the Owls were nine points behind in sixth.

Sheffield Wednesday went on to reach the play-offs again 12 months later, but they suffered another defeat as they lost to Huddersfield Town in the semi-finals on penalties.

Hull will now be looking to repeat that feat again this season under Jakirovic, and a victory over Henrik Pedersen’s side would go a long way to ensuring they finish inside the top six.

This afternoon’s game will be marked with a Legends Parade on the pitch, with names such as Frankie Banks, Ron Young and Ken Wagstaff all returning to the club.

Supporters are being encouraged to wear retro kits to the ground as part of the celebrations, with the team looking to get back to winning ways after last weekend’s 3-0 loss to West Brom.

Oli McBurnie would cherish a goal against Sheffield Wednesday

McBurnie hasn’t found the back of the net for Hull since their 4-2 win over Derby County on 24 February, so he would love to be back among the goals this afternoon.

Scoring against Sheffield Wednesday would be extra sweet due to his connection with their bitter rivals Sheffield United.

The Tigers will be heavily favoured this afternoon due to Pedersen’s side’s poor form, as they have won just once all season.

A victory would go a long way to earning Hull a place in the play-offs, with the team only three points clear of Wrexham in seventh.
