OM: Will Azzedine Ounahi finally sign for Panathinaikos?
Azzedine Ounahi is on his way to Panathinaikos, where he already spent last season on loan. According to the latest reports, Olympique de Marseille and the Greek club reached an agreement this Tuesday, August 12, for the permanent transfer of the Moroccan midfielder.
The 25-year-old Moroccan midfielder, who had given his approval earlier this week, is set to leave Ligue 1 in hopes of reviving his career in the Greek Super League after a mixed stint in Marseille. Signed in January 2023 for around €10 million from Angers, Ounahi never truly found his footing in the Marseille squad. His dazzling performances with Morocco at the 2022 World Cup had sparked huge excitement upon his arrival. But despite a few flashes of brilliance, he was unable to firmly establish himself.
Trained at Raja AC and then at the Mohammed VI Academy, Azzedine Ounahi joined RC Strasbourg at eighteen before moving to US Avranches at twenty. In 2021, he signed a four-year contract with SCO Angers, where he made his professional debut. He went on to play 45 matches for OM, scoring 3 goals. Frequently hampered by injuries and inconsistency, he is set to leave Marseille through the back door.
Panathinaikos, impressed by Ounahi’s profile, submitted a firm offer of €8 million plus €2 million in bonuses. The proposal was deemed satisfactory by Marseille's management, who are eager to reduce the wage bill and rebalance the squad. Negotiations accelerated in recent days, and according to a source close to the club, Ounahi quickly gave his approval. He is expected in Athens within the next 48 hours to undergo a medical and sign a three- to four-year contract, with the final details currently being ironed out.
