Myles Lewis-Skelly has returned to the England U21 side, with his age still allowing him to feature at that level, following his omission from the senior national team.
His limited game time at Arsenal has reduced his chances of receiving further call-ups to the senior England squad, despite having been a first-choice option when Thomas Tuchel initially took charge of the Three Lions. Lewis-Skelly remains a talented left-back, but he now finds himself behind Piero Hincapie and Riccardo Calafiori in the pecking order at the Emirates.
This situation has significantly affected his opportunities at club level, which in turn has impacted his prospects on the international stage. A lack of consistent minutes makes it difficult for any player to maintain visibility with national team selectors, and Lewis-Skelly is no exception.
Despite these challenges, Lee Carsley included him in the latest England U21 squad, where he delivered a commendable performance. His inclusion highlights the continued belief in his ability, even as he navigates a difficult period in his club career.
In addition to his performances, Lewis-Skelly’s attitude has been praised by his manager, who said via Hayters:
“There’s no point in us bringing players of high potential and then not playing them.
“A player like Myles is a real asset for us, but we have to make sure that we get the head as well as the body. We definitely got that with Myles. His attitude was outstanding.”
This recognition underlines his professionalism and commitment, qualities that remain crucial as he seeks to re-establish himself at both club and international level.
It has been a challenging season for Lewis-Skelly, and he may need to consider leaving Arsenal at the end of the campaign to secure regular playing time. Consistent minutes will be essential if he is to regain momentum and strengthen his chances of returning to the senior England setup in the future.
