Mikel Oyarzabal returned to Zubieta on Wednesday morning to share his World Cup triumph with Real Sociedad, receiving an emotional welcome from team-mates and staff.
According to Diario Vasco, the forward arrived after two intense days of celebrations, first in New York then in Madrid. He had also appeared in his hometown Eibar with family and friends before visiting the training ground ahead of a short break.
Smiling widely and without the trophy replica or his medal, he stepped onto the Zubieta pitch where the wider Real family awaited. Only hours earlier he had paraded the club’s flag during the festivities in Madrid.
The squad formed a guard of honour, Oyarzabal greeting colleagues with hugs and handshakes. His reunion with Remiro, who narrowly missed out on the World Cup squad, was especially poignant.
After the greetings, and urged on by Matarazzo, the players hoisted their captain into the air. The coach and Zubeldia said it was an honour and a source of pride for everyone.
The visit capped a historic season for Oyarzabal. He lifted the Cup with Real Sociedad, then won the World Cup with Spain. He now has 61 caps and 30 goals, five of them at this World Cup, contributing to Spain’s second star.
