Dani Parejo, the club captain, has ended his spell at Villarreal after six seasons, announcing on the club’s social channels that he will not continue. The player said in a post that it was a farewell for now rather than a final goodbye.

The midfielder leaves having made 269 appearances, scoring 16 goals and providing 36 assists. During that time he lifted the Europa League and reached a Champions League semi-final.

At 37, he underlined that he was parting ways with Villarreal but did not set out his next steps. He expressed pride and gratitude for his time in yellow and said the club will remain a home in his heart.

Villarreal becomes the second club for which Parejo has played the most matches, behind the 383 he recorded with Valencia.

Across his career he has also represented Getafe, Real Madrid and Queens Park Rangers. A product of Real Madrid’s academy, he has four senior caps for Spain.
