Brazilian clubs have backed a CBF plan to reduce the number of foreign players allowed per match from 2027, and Pedrinho has set out why Vasco supported it despite doubts.

“My vote in favour is a vote of confidence in everything the CBF has done. Do I believe this is the best path? No, but I voted in favour because I believe we will still talk and that this will be reversed. It was just a vote of confidence,” he told the Igor Rodrigues channel.

His stance drew attention because, while saying he wants a different outcome from what the CBF is imposing, he still sided with the federation in the ballot.

Vasco are among the Brazilian sides with the most foreign players, and the team are coached by Portuguese manager Pedro Emanuel.

The vote set a phased cut, with eight permitted in 2027, seven in 2028, six in 2029 and five in 2030. Flamengo, Bahia and Londrina were the only clubs to oppose the change.

Flamengo currently have 10 foreign players in their senior squad and now turn to Santos in the Brasileirão at Vila Belmiro on Thursday.
